The schools they have worked at were diverse in location, organization, size and student population. Leo Buscaglia was correct when he said, “Life is uncharted territory. It reveals its story one moment at a time.” As children growing up in Wisconsin, neither thought they would become world travelers. However, they have been fortunate to have many opportunities presented to them and each has revealed a different story. Many people ask which place/school they have liked the best, but that is like comparing apples and oranges. Each country, school, students and staff has given them many new, treasured experiences. Escola Americana de Brasília (EAB), Brazil was their first overseas position. EAB is an independent college preparatory school for grades K-12. At the time, there were approximately 540 students from 21 nationalities. Chris worked as a computer technician and network administrator and coordinated the technology needs of the school with an Upper School computer teacher and Lower School computer teacher. During his time at EAB, he designed and helped construct a new lower school computer lab and redesigned the two upper school computer labs. The school was networked with fiber optics and each classroom had at least one computer. In addition, he maintained the 150+ computers around the school. Suzanne was originally hired as a Reading Teacher and was responsible for working with both push-in and pull-out needs of the students and coordinated her work with the Child Study team. When a sudden opening appeared in the Middle School, she transferred to the position of 7th and 8th grade English teacher. She introduced the techniques of literature circles and webquests to the middle school. In addition to her teaching duties, after the second year, she was selected to be Team Leader of the Middle School, and in that capacity, she facilitated team meetings, led parent meetings, directed the thematic interdisciplinary studies and field trips, and was a liaison to the administration. The American International School of Vilnius, Lithuania was an extreme change in latitude and climate. However, this small independent school of about 110 students provided many opportunities for growth. Besides network administration, technology coordination and computer maintenance, Chris also taught computer classes for grades 6-10. A life skills course, based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey, was introduced and Chris took on the challenge of facilitating this program for students in grades 9 and 10. He also took over the creation of the school's yearbook and digitized the process. Suzanne truly became a Middle School Generalist as she taught science, history, English, study skills for the Middle School and IGCSE classes in English and history for the high school. Additionally, she become Team Leader. In this role, she continued to strength her skills in administration as much of the day-to-day business of the Upper School was managed by her. Sweaters were packed away to make room for snorkel gear, as the Poraths moved to the International School of Aruba. At present, this private college preparatory school of about 160 students continues to yield more possibilities for growth. Chris's ability to multi-task allows him to wear several hats – network administrator, technology coordinator, computer technician, computer teacher, form and report creator, yearbook advisor and jack of all trades. Flexibility is key for Suzanne, as she has taught science, history, drama, and English for the Middle School and is currently the Upper School English teacher for grades 7-12, including Advanced Placement. In the last two years, she has guided the process of curriculum mapping for the school which included large and small group studies and surveys. After school activities are an important part of the school and Suzanne is the National Honor Society faculty advisor and directs after school drama for the Middle School.
